My Winter Workout Routine

Happy Friday, everyone! I am so excited for the weekend, this week seemed to drag on forever. Today I thought it would be fun/different to share my updated workout routine with you. I know a lot of you made some fitness resolutions for 2017 (I did too!) and are excited about working towards those. Although like every girl I want a “bikini body,” working out is more about how I feel on the inside. I love the feeling of accomplishment I have after a good workout, and it gives me confidence to know that I’m strong enough to do 15 push-ups or whatnot. Exercise is also a HUGE stress reliever… if I’m feeling anxious or stressed out, heading to a pure barre class or going on a long run does wonders to clear my head.

Anyway, here’s my basic routine:

*Pure barre: Yep I’m still doing pure barre! I answered a bunch of questions about pure barre in THIS blog post. It is the only workout class I’ve taken that I’ve been able to see dramatic results with. I’ve been in sports/worked out my whole life and never had ab muscles, until pure barre! This is my main source of exercise. My goal for January/February is to go four times per week.

*Sweat with Kayla: A lot of you guys are probably familiar with Kayla Itsines, the Australian workout goddess behind “Bikini Body Guide” workouts. I have followed her on instagram for years and am constantly inspired by her posts. I’m not super serious about following her program, but on days when I don’t go to a pure barre class I love doing the workouts on the Sweat with Kayla app. The workouts are 28 minutes long and you can choose whatever area you want to focus on: legs, arms, abs or cardio. Just a warning, the workouts are insanely hard. I usually can’t do everything it says to, but I always end up getting a really good workout. (FYI – the app is pretty cool and also has healthy recipe ideas, grocery shopping lists and a weekly workout planner.)

*YouTube videos: Sometimes my days are so busy that I literally only have ten minutes free for a workout. That’s where YouTube comes in handy! If you’ve followed me for a long time, you probably know that I’ve sworn by the “8 Minute” workout videos for YEARS. (My mom does them too!) 8 Minute Abs is an amazing ab workout, and I do 8 Minute Arms with a set of 3-lb weights. They’re really easy to fit in your routine in the morning or right before bed.

*Walks/Runs/Fun Activities: Chris and I both like doing active things together. We go on a walk or go to the park at least once a week. We’ve always done this, but it’s even more fun now because we have Winnie! We take her off her leash at the park and have contests to see who can run the fastest. Chris and I also like to hike and play tennis in the spring and summer. I also like to plan physical activities with my girlfriends, we also love to go on walks or we’ll go to a pure barre class together – working out is way more fun with a friend!

If you have any questions about my workouts, let me know in the comments 🙂

  2. Ohhhh I love those Nike's. I've never seen that type of material on them before. And its because of you that I started doing barre. After reading that post, I started researching barre classes in my own city and I have been hooked ever since <3

  3. I am so keen on trying the Pure Barre! I even bought the whole ballet getup – down to the warmers and slippers but I never even researched to see if there is a class nearby! 🙂
By the way – I am a huge fan of Karina and Katrina from ToneItUP – they have a YouTube channel as well and most of their workouts are also around 10 min, but are hard work!

  4. Hey, Caitlin! I have been following your blog for a while now, and you are one of my absolute favorites! 🙂

I sent you an email a few weeks ago about doing an interview with EarnSpendLive.com — we're not a blog, we're more of a community site that focuses on helping millennial women climb the career ladder, manage their finances, while also living life to the fullest. We have an interview series where we chat with successful business women and entrepreneurs (like yourself!) to get the kind of "behind the scenes" about what goes into running your own business, your tips for success, etc.

Let me know if you would be interested in doing an interview with us — I think your story would be a great addition to our site! 🙂

  10. I agree with you on that working out makes me feel more accomplished and proud that I am stronger. I'm always up for trying something new and challenging my body to do something different. In fact, last night, I did Kung Fu for the first time. My calves are so sore today! I thought it was interesting because I teach dance for a living and do a lot of leg routines with calf raises and my calves are never as sore as they were after one Kung Fu class. So it's interesting that muscles that are already developed and strong can be seriously challenged by a different activity. And just out of curiosity, you said you want a 'bikini body.' I'm just wondering what that means for you? I know for some it means losing weight, or toning up their butt, or slimming down in the tummy, etc. I was just wondering what it meant for you. It just surprised me to read that.

    • Hey! Good question. I definitely don't want to lose any weight, just gain muscle and tone up my stomach area. I am also trying to get a bigger booty hahaha so I've been doing a lot of squats!

      1.13.17Reply
    • Oh yeah, I totally understand that! I'm the same way. Check out Fitness Blender on youtube. They have some great leg routines! I've noticed a change in my lower body since I started doing their workouts. I have a ton more leg and booty muscle than I used to.

  11. Love these photos! I love that you have a variety of workout plans that depend on how your day is going. I just started BBG for the first time and yes, the workouts are SO hard, but make you feel very accomplishment and strong afterwards!

There is also a big community of Tone It Up girls on social who support each other, especially on instagram if you search for @toneitup, @karenakatrina or #tiuteam!

I am new to following your blog and I'm loving all your posts! I'm curious if you have any spring/vacation fashion/makeup/travel ideas your working on? I know it's a few months away and your busy getting ready for baby but I'm traveling to Turks and Caicos early March and would love some tips if you have time! I looked at last years blogs but of course all the fabulous items you posted are all sold out:) thanks and have a great weekend! Gelia

    • Hi Gelia, Was this comment meant for someone else? 🙂 I am not having a baby haha. However, I do am planning some spring/vacation posts, they should be coming up within a couple of weeks!

      1.13.17Reply
    • Ha!! I'm so sorry! I had meant to send that one to your friend, Emily Gemma, another blog I follow and the one without the baby info to you. Still requesting the same things! Fashion and makeup ideas for island travel in March:) thanks!

  23. Pure Barre is my favorite! I agree with you completely – it's the only workout I've done that I've seen consistent results in. Not to mention, the studio environment is always great wherever you go. I never thought I'd be the type of person to enjoy group workout classes, but I love it!

  27. Working out during winter can be tough! I like to jog but it's too dark in the mornings and evenings during winter. I tried a barre ab workout on pop sugar online and it left me sore!
I have a fitness question. I see Starbucks in some of your pictures and I love Starbucks but I know everything I like from there has a ton of sugar. What do you order from Starbucks that won't ruin your fitness goals?

  28. Thanks for sharing this post! I love knowing what other ladies are doing to workout. We don't have Pure Barre, but I go to Booty Barre (it might be similar) which I love and see results super quick too! I love those nike's too!
