Updated Hair Care Post

T3 curling wand
Lately I’ve been getting more questions/comments/emails than usual about my hair, so I figured it was time for an updated post on my hair routine. Although a lot has stayed the same, I have been using some different products that have really helped to keep my hair healthy! Also FYI, this post is the same format as my old one, if you have an additional hair question please leave it in the comments!
Q: How often do you shampoo your hair?
A: I wash and condition my hair only twice per week, and sometimes only once (yikes!) but honestly, I try to go as long as I can without washing it (FYI I take a bath or use a shower cap on days when I don’t wash my hair!). Not shampooing every day is actually really good for your hair – there are a lot of natural oils in your hair that make it healthier and shinier and shampooing strips your hair of these oils. I typically wash mine at the beginning of the week… once I blow dry it and curl it, I won’t have to do anything to it for a few days. Sometimes I touch up the curls with my curling wand if I am taking photos, but that’s it.
Q: What dry shampoo do you use?
I use Kerastase Powder Bluff dry shampoo – the reason why I’m able to go so long between washes! I really like it because it goes on clear (unlike many dry shampoos that leave behind a white residue) and it’s extremely volumizing. Sometimes I spray it on my roots just to help give my hair some volume, even if my hair is freshly washed.

Q: What shampoo and conditioner do you use?
A: Okay don’t kill me because these products are kind of expensive, but I have gone through two sets of this shampoo and this conditioner and am OBSESSED. My hair has never felt healthier. I don’t even use deep conditioner anymore!
Q: What heat products do you use to blow dry, straighten, and curl your hair?
To blow dry, I use this hair dryer. It’s extraordinarily powerful and dries my hair much faster than other dryers. When I travel, I bring the travel sized version with me – it’s incredibly powerful for it’s size and I love that it folds up to become even more compact. To straighten my hair, I use a Chi 1″ straightener – mine is super old, so there are probably some better ones out now. And finally, to curl my hair I use this curling wand with the 1″ attachment. It really is an amazing curling wand… it’s an investment, but definitely worth it.

Q. Is your curling wand really THAT good?
You would be surprised how much I hear this question, but the answer is YES! It’s the real deal, y’all! I’ve convinced several of my friends to get it and they swear that they will never use another curling wand again. I have no idea why it works so well, but it does. The curls last for multiple days!

Q: How do your curl your hair?
I actually filmed a YouTube video a loooong time ago! I’m kind of awkward in front of the camera haha, but the video can be found here. A good tip I go by: always curl the strands of hair away from your face!
Q: Do you recommend taking vitamins for hair growth?
A: Yes! I take Olly’s Undeniable Beauty vitamins (I get them from Target) and I do believe they really work. I haven’t really noticed a difference in my nails, but my hair does grow faster and I swear my eyelashes do too. Really any vitamin with biotin will help your hair grow.
Q: Can you recommend a good deep conditioner?
A: I’m a HUGE fan of deep conditioners, although I haven’t had to use them lately because my regular conditioner is so moisturizing! I do love both this deep conditioning wrap and this wrap for split ends. They really do work – the split end wrap is pretty cool because you just slide it over your ponytail and keep it on for 15 minutes. I’ll clean or answer emails while it’s conditioning my hair!
Q: What’s one hair product you can’t live without?
Definitely this Moroccanoil Treatment. I purchased my first bottle a year ago and have bought at least three more bottles since then. A little bit goes a long way, so this product will last you a long time. I apply it before blow drying my hair, and sometimes use a small amount on dry hair to tame flyways and condition split ends. It’s truly a miracle worker!
Q: Any tips for growing out your hair?
Taking care of your body by exercising and eating the right foods is actually the best way to make your hair grow… Make sure you’re getting enough protein and vitamins in your diet. I’ve also heard that brushing your scalp with a wire-bristled brush can help stimulate the hair follicles and promote hair growth. If I remember, I’ll brush my scalp with this brush for about five minutes every night. Also – they say you’re supposed to get a trim every six weeks, but I totally don’t follow that rule. Don’t get a trim unless you need one, otherwise you’re just preventing your hair from getting longer!

Q: Do you wear hair extensions?
Nope! I don’t wear hair extensions and never have. I have a few friends that use them for volume though, and they love them!

Q. I noticed you have really blonde hair, do you dye your hair now? If so what color or highlights do you do?
A. No, I don’t highlight or dye my hair – I was out in the sun a lot this summer and it got really blonde! It will probably get darker this fall/winter.

Q. How you do you keep your hair as it is when you work out? When I work out I have to put my hair in a ponytail and then it gets all over the place. I would love to wash my hair less but the whole working out thing ruins it.
A. I go to Pure Barre for workouts 2-3 times per week and I just braid my hair while I’m there (it’s a lot less “stressful” on your hair than putting it in a ponytail). The workout consists of really small, isolated movements and is really hard but I’m never sweating that much, so it saves me from having to wash my hair. I use dry shampoo afterwards.

Like I said above, if you have an additional question let me know in the comment section and I’ll respond there!

xoxo

Your hair is always so beautiful! How do you keep it as it is when you work out? When I work out I have to put my hair in a pony tail and then it gets all over the place. I would love to wash my hair less but the whole working out thing ruins it.

    • I braid my hair while I'm working out and somehow that helps it from getting ruined! I also go to Pure Barre which isn't a really "sweaty" workout – if I was doing something that made me sweat a lot I would probably have to wash it.

  5. Do you use a certain hairspray to help keep the curls in? Whenever I curl my hair, the curls always fall out… Thanks!

    • Sorry I meant that I noticed you had really blonde hair in the past I'm trying to go back to my natural colors but I don't know how to get there. You have such beautiful long hair, do you have any recommendations??

  13. I would love a video or a "how I use dry shampoo" post, as I have no clue how to use that kind of product. Also, is the kerastase better than the Moroccan oil dry shampoo you mentioned in a previous post?

    10.7.16Reply
    • Thanks for your suggestion I can definitely work on a dry shampoo video! And I really like both dry shampoos but I've found that the Kerastase just adds a little more volume!

      10.7.16Reply
  14. Caitlin you should try the Kenra blow dry line it smells amazing. I love it. It is reduces dry time.

  15. I've been buying expensive shampoo and conditioner lately too but it's awesome! If you only wash/condition 1-2 times a week the bottles last a long time!! I also find the more expensive products (I use Davines) are more concentrated so you use less per was too. Worth the investment.

Also, my husband and I are going to Charleston next weekend and I wanted to know if you had any "must see" places or things to do and the best restaurants?

    10.7.16Reply
    • Definitely check out the marketplace (it's in an old slave market building) where a lot of vendors set up shops and sell homemade jewelry… you could also take a carriage tour, and you definitely have to walk by the battery and see all the gorgeous houses next to the water. I really love St. Alban or City Lights for coffee… as for restaurants, Magnolias is amazing as is Poogan's Porch (definitely go there for brunch), Taco Boy (Mexican), Oku (sushi), and Jim & Nicks (barbecue – more casual). The Market Pavilion bar/restaurant is my hands down favorite place… it's on a rooftop and has a great view of Charleston – go there for drinks or their four cheese pizza is AMAZING. If y'all want to go to the beach one day definitely go to Sullivan's Island – you can park anywhere along the island and walk to the beach.

  22. You hair is always gorgeous! You mentioned a few times in the comments that you braid your hair when you work out. Do you intentionally avoid putting your hair up in a bun or ponytail?

    10.7.16Reply
    • Yes I do! I used to wear my hair in a ponytail to work out and my hair started breaking off at the ponytail holder (maybe I had it too tight) – anyway from then on I started braiding it. It's MUCH more gentle on your hair and no hair breakage occurs!

  25. This post is amazing! What's your strategy for keeping you hair looking great even after sleeping on it. I never wake up with curls in the morning…

    10.7.16Reply
    • Sometimes I wrap my hair in a loose bun on top of my head while I sleep. This helps to keep the curls in tact even if I roll around while I sleep!

  27. This post is great! I have such a hard time trying to style my hair in to soft curls and waves but it's always great to read how others do their hair. I loved your point about not over-washing your hair, it's incredible how dry and static your hair can become if you wash it too much and wash out the natural oils.

  28. Your hair is so gorgeous! I'll definately be taking these tips into consideration. My biggest problem with my hair though is that it's really heavy and doesn't hold hairstyles very well, like curls for example. Even though it's heavy, it doesn't have much volume which leaves me kinda worried that if I try to make my hair a bit more weightless it'll look too flat.

  29. I'm always amazed by your hair! It's so long and healthy looking! I'm blown away that you don't wear extensions. Hair goals for sure girl 🙂 xx, Hannah
