Belles of the Beach: Preparation

Hello lovelies!

Spring break is ALMOST here - just TWO more days. When it's so close, how do you prepare?

I start planning outfits for each day (like this one!)...

{one, two, three, four, five, six}

I love this look because it can get cool at night in March (even in the tropics), so a maxi dress is perfect for keeping warm but still showing off a newly-acquired tan. The wedges and necklace add pops of color, and I'm absolutely loving the coral of the lipstick and matching clutch.

I also make lots of lists, lists, lists!

 This packing list is a good start, but I like making my own (so I don't forget the little things: my favorite lip gloss, extra contacts, new sunnies, etc).

Finally, I have to get my body ready, as well! 


I incorporate Crest Whitestrips into my routine the week before.

And for my pale skin...


Self-tanners! Jergens natural glow lotion gradually gives your skin a natural golden glow with each use, and for $9 a bottle, it lasts quite a while. Tan Towel is a bit more expensive ($27 for a pack of ten towelettes), but these wipes are super easy to use and give you a beautiful tan!

Our flight leaves this Friday, but I'll give you one last update before I leave. This whole packing thing is killing me...

Spring 2012 Makeup Trends

Hello lovelies!

I don't know about you guys, but this weather has me craving spring! I'm tired of icky, pale skin and a blah makeup routine. Spring is not only the season of renewal, but it's also the perfect opportunity to refresh your makeup palette.


So what are the top trends for Spring 2012? 


 The "dewy skin" look is in, girls! Get your face primers out and start priming. Be careful with certain products, though - you don't want to look like an oil slick. What you do want: healthy looking skin!
"That Gal" is my favorite primer. When I don't feel like wearing makeup, I dab some on my cheeks and forehead and blend for a fresh-faced glow.


 This season I'm mad about MAC lip color. The New York fashion runway featured lip colors in all different shades of red. I'm usually a nude lip kinda girl, but I'm excited to branch out. This look is so bold and beautiful, I love it!

If you're not quite that adventurous, there's a way to pull it off that's understated. Be courageous and go for a slightly brighter lip color than you normally would. Stay away from reds and go for a fuschia or coral lip, instead.


Even if you don't get to vacation in a tropical paradise this spring, you can still look like it! Fake it 'til you make it, babes. My skin gets insanely pale in the winter months, which is why "Watt's Up" by Benefit tops the list for my favorite makeup products. Applied to cheekbones, it lightens up your face with a champagne shimmer, while also giving you that bronze sun-kissed glow. Don't forget to apply a powder bronzer first!


Cat eyes were all over the catwalk this year, and you can achieve them with some super mascara - like this one by Estee Lauder (it's my fave!). The blacker, the better. If you need a little boost, try applying a primer (like Estee Lauder's Lash Primer Plus) to lashes before adding mascara. The white primer will plump up your lashes for added volume! If you want a cheaper option, try Maybelline's two-in-one primer and mascara, my favorite drugstore option.


Finally, pastel nails are in this season. I'm loving the latest collection from Essie, especially these three pastel hues. In love!

Belles of the Beach: The Suits

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Guess what?
Spring Break is less than two weeks away!
Know what that means? It's crunch time... starting with some bikini shopping.

The perfect suit on spring break is a must! You want a suit that you feel comfortable in, and there are plenty of options this season.
What to look for: 
Bold prints, bright colors (think neon), details such as sequins and ruffles, and nautical vibes. Think ultra-feminine and ultra-sexy (and you don't even have to break the bank!). Target has plenty of affordable options, like the first one below:

And of course, I'll always hold a soft spot in my heart for Vicky's Secret... I've never been disappointed with a bathing suit purchase from them. All of their suits are high-quality and reasonably well-priced.

(Side note: Immediately after I bought them, it started snowing!! Talk about depressing).

Belles of the Beach: Breakfast Smoothie

Hello lovelies!

When I'm really busy at school, I need some motivation to get up in the morning...
 which is why I've started making power smoothies for breakfast.

It's like waking up to a mini-vacation every day. For ten minutes, I get to sip my smoothie and feel like I'm on a beach somewhere being fanned by hot boys under the shade of a palm tree... if you get what I mean. It's a moment of relaxation before I have to trudge off to my internship, classes, meetings and the other mundane activities of everyday life.

The best part? Well, there's several.

One, it's insanely healthy (your bikini bod will thank you), and two, it's so delicious you will be tempted to make one for lunch, and dinner, and a midnight snack, and so on. So...


...What's the secret? 

Apple juice.

I swear! I don't know what it is about apple juice, but it makes the smoothie so much better. There are plenty of fruit combinations to try (and you pretty much can't go wrong), as long as apple juice is in the mix.
The one I had this morning (pictured above and below) is my favorite combination.

Breakfast Smoothie
1/2 cup apple juice
1 cup frozen fruit mix: strawberry, mango, and pineapple
1 small banana
1/2 cup ice

Blend. Drink. Spoon. Enjoy.

Nutrition: ~200 calories


Perfect way to get your antioxidants in the morning!

Belles of the Beach: Get Fit Feb

Hey everyone!

To continue with the Belles of the Beach series, I wanted to share with you my fitness and workout plan for the month of February. 


I customized my calendar to include rest days and the types of workouts I like.

For instance, I love taking advantage of the gym classes on campus. Mondays are always kickboxing days, and Tuesdays and Thursdays are strictly for zumba!

Because Wednesdays are always incredibly busy for me, I only have about 30 minutes to dedicate to working out. These are the days that I focus on "abs, arms, legs." For this workout, I turn to youtube! I am a huge fan of the 80s videos, "8 minute abs" and "8 minute arms." These workouts are very time-efficient (but harrrd!) and I can do them in the morning before I hop in the shower. I have a pair of three-pound weights that I use for these exercises. 

Fill out your own!

*Remember to add in rest days, which are extremely important. Your body needs to rest every once in a while - it also gives your muscles time to re-build
*Switch it up! Remember to combine cardio with weight training so you maximize your time
*Don't be too hard on yourself! Be proud of the workouts that you do finish, and don't get upset if you don't have time to complete your workout that day

Quick & Easy: Quinoa

Last week, I told ya'll I was going to give you a healthy quinoa recipe.
Hence, I give you BBQ Chicken Quinoa, packed with filling protein and lots of flavor!


So why quinoa? It looks a little funny and it's hard to say (Did you know it's pronounced KEEN-wah?).

This edible seed is similar to rice but is packed with protein - like meat. It's rich in all nine essential amino acids and high in lysine (the amino acid responsible for tissue growth and repair). It also boasts fiber, iron, magnesium and manganese. That makes quinoa an awesome post-workout snack AND a great addition to your bikini bod diet! ;)


BBQ Chicken Quinoa

1 cup uncooked quinoa
1 cup corn
1 cup black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup shredded rotisserie chicken
1 avocado
1/4 cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded
5 tbsp BBQ sauce

Heat quinoa in a saucepan with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, turn the heat down and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, cup up the avocado and toss in a large bowl with corn and black beans.
Shred the rotisserie chicken and toss with the other ingredients.
When quinoa is done cooking, combine everything.
Serve warm, topped with shredded cheese and BBQ sauce.

Store in the fridge and enjoy all week!

Belles of the Beach: Celebrity Style

This week's celebrity beach icon is...
Audrina Patridge. 

Audrina grew up on a beach in Orange County, CA and has been around water all her life. Besides having a stellar bod, the Hills hottie also always has the cutest suits!


Audrina is a fan of bright colors and fun patterns. She also likes to mix tops and bottoms of different swimsuits. She often pairs a solid colored top with different colored bottoms.

In Shape magazine, Audrina dishes about how to look hot on the beach. Here are a few of her tips:

1. Try on, try on, try on!
 Audrina recommends going to the store and trying on as many different styles of swimsuits to see what works for your body type, skin tone, and lifestyle. "Be open-minded," she says. "Even if you think you know what works on your body, you may be really surprised by the results."

2. Cover Up
If you feel self-conscious in your suit, experiment with strategic cover-ups that showcase your best assets, be it toned legs or sexy shoulders. "You can team a gauzy tunic with a bikini bottom," she says, "or flaunt your upper body with a suit top paired with a long skirt." Even Audrina covers up when she heads to the beach, such as with this cute gauzy top:


3. Flex Your Muscles
For an extra boost of confidence before she heads onto the beach, Audrina does a quick series of squats and sit-ups. "I like to get the blood flowing to those areas," she explains. "I feel tighter and stronger, and it gives my skin a nice rosy glow."

4. Fake It
One glance at Audrina and you know she loves having that golden tan. "I have olive skin, so if I'm in the sun for even 15 minutes, I turn brown," she says. "But I'm much more aware of protecting my skin from the sun's rays than I was in my teens and early 20s." Now she's a fan of self-tanners and is extra careful about applying sunscreen—ones by Lancer Rx, Neutrogena, and Kiehl's are faves. "These products give my skin a smoother look and firmer appearance," she says.

5. Shine On
Another trick Audrina swears by is to rub a little Hawaiian Tropic Oil onto her skin over her sunscreen. "It keeps skin soft and accentuates your muscles," she says. "But you have to be careful not to use too much or you could end up looking greasy!"

Belles of the Beach: Flat Belly Diet

Happy February, everyone!


To kick off the beginning of the "Belles of the Beach" series, I wanted to share my mealplan with you guys. 

Basically, I'm cutting all sodas and fried food (two of my weaknesses) out of my diet and trying to eat as "clean" as possible. This means filling up on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lots of protein. I'm limiting my sugar intake but not cutting desserts out completely, since we all know I'd go crazy without my daily dose of sugar! 

In order to tone up and lose fat, you have to feed yourself. It's important to eat something every few hours (so you're never hungry) and stay extremely hydrated. Keep your Tervis tumbler with you at all times!

Here's an example of a "perfect day" for your bikini bod, and the type of meals I plan on eating daily:

These are all of my favorite foods!
The calorie breakdown is as follows:
Breakfast: 300
Mid-morning snack: 120
Lunch: 350
Dinner: 500
Dessert: 100
Snacks: 130

The total for this day comes in around 1,500 calories. This is my goal for each day, but of course, this number will vary depending on what your goals are!

It's important to plan out your meals for the week so that you can pick up everything in one trip to the grocery store. Variety is also key, so make sure to stock up on different types of vegetables and fruits.

What most people don't realize: the key to getting a bikini bod is not solely working out (although it helps a ton!). In order to see the results of the muscle you're building, you need to be eating the right things: fresh, all-natural foods. When you fill up on potato chips and candy bars, your body doesn't know what to do with the artificial ingredients, and turns the sugars into fat.
