Carrie's Card Trick

Hey babes!

Let's talk fitness. More specifically, let's talk Carrie Underwood fitness.

Carrie is one of my favorite celebrities. She's has fabulous style, a big voice, and one of the hottest bods around. I mean, just take a look at those sculpted legs!

Ow ow!

 In the latest issue of Self magazine, Carrie shared her secret for torching calories and toning up. Her method is fun and easy, but also keeps you from getting bored during a workout. As soon as I read about it, I couldn't wait to try it out.

Carrie says:
"I have a game I love for when I'm working out on my own, without a trainer.
I take a deck of cards and assign each suit a body area - say, diamonds for arms, hearts for legs, spades for core and clubs for cardio.
I split the deck in half and write down exercises for each suit, a different one for each half. So, if I flip over the six of hearts, I'll do six squats. If the next card is ace of diamonds, that's 14 push-ups. Sometimes I'll make spades boxing and beat the crap out of the bag for however many punches the number on the card says. Having different exercises for each half of the deck keeps me from getting bored. I make sure there's a joker in each half - that's a mile run on the treadmill. Then I go through the whole deck. With a 15-minute warm-up on the elliptical, it takes about an hour and a half total, but it's fun because you've designed the whole workout yourself."

I tried this workout earlier today, and while I only got through half the deck, I worked up quite a sweat. The best part was I could customize the workout to the types of exercises I like to do. For instance, I hateeee squats, so when I picked a "leg" card, I opted for leg lifts instead. I also did jumping jacks, planks, crunches, and bicep curls. Going through half the deck of cards took me only 30 minutes and was super effective - I'll definitely be sore tomorrow!

My cards and workout mat!

Check out the mag for more of Carrie's workout tips, as well as the typical meals she eats. I can't get enough of her! How about you guys?

Southern Girl, Big City

Hello friends!

This southern gal is back from New York, after traversing the city in my cowgirl boots.
Literally the most exhausting three days of my entire life, but also some of the best!

Snapshots of the past few days:
{Watching the Carolina game at Brother Jimmy's BBQ}
{Necklace purchases at So Good Jewelry in SoHo}
{Visiting Meredith Corp for a meeting with Fitness mag}
{Lunching at Le Pain Quotidien}
{The inside of Hearst Tower}
{The view from Food Network Mag offices}
 {The city at night, from my plane window}

I successfully navigated the subway system, took advantage of some NYC shopping deals, and got to see the insides of my favorite magazines (such as Self and Marie Claire!). We talked to fashion editors, creative directors, executive editors, etc. And we even learned some dirt on celebs...
Such as how Blake Lively is obsessed with Ronnybrook chocolate milk!

Hope you all had a great start to the week :)
I'm about to go catch up on some sleep...

This season, I'm dreaming of flowy pleated skirts, a pair of pastel wedges...
{one, two}

Feminine details, sleek lines, a pretty mint bow...

I can't get enough of this Spring's prettiest pastel.
Here's a little mint-spiration for you!

Happy weekend!

This southern gal is off to the big city tomorrow (the BIG BIG city - NYC!).
Wish me luck, friends :)

Talk Derby To Me

Hello friends!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Mine was extremely fun but - whew! - I'm exhausted. Friday night was our Kentucky Derby cocktail at the Carolina Inn, and we had friends over to our house beforehand.

I wore Lilly (of course) and my sun hat is from J Crew.

Meet my lovely roommates!

We had the best time socializing before...

And just look at these cute cups my roommate Sarah found!

I'm obsessed with cups, if you didn't know.

Afterward, we walked to the Carolina Inn for the cocktail. It was the perfect southern evening spent under a clear Carolina sky. Shrimp and grits, a glass of wine, good friends, and a night of shag dancing: Perfect!

The rest of the weekend was fun, as well. My friend Kelsey came in town Saturday for St. Patty's Day and yesterday was spent catching up on homework. Today is dreary outside and it's making me want to curl up in bed! What happened to the beautiful spring weather?

Happy Monday, everyone!

Friday Fives

Hey lovies!

Can I have a cheers to it being the weekend?! I don't know about you guys, but North Carolina is having some phenomenal weather right now. Somethin' about sunshine and blue skies just puts me in a happy state of mind.
Here's what I've been loving this week...

1. New Arm Candy

Instagram pic of the newest addition to my jewelry box: a neon pink bling bracelet from J Crew! I've been lusting over this bracelet ever since I saw it in stores three weeks ago, and when I got back to the U.S. I was still thinking of it.
I knew I had to go back and get it!

P.S. I couldn't find the bracelet anywhere online, but it should still be in stores.

2. Oversized Envelope Clutches

... especially this one by Sabo Skirt.

I love how chic it is! And roomy, especially for a clutch. What can I say? I'm a sucker for pink.

3. SNAX!

I've found so many great snacks in the grocery store lately.
Example one: Greek yogurt companies keep bustin' out new flavors.

I loveeee Chobani Pomegranate!

And all of Fage's new flavors, especially Melon Guanabana (it tastes like it's straight from the tropics!)

Finally, I found this little gem at Target...

 Hummus and pretzels crisps in one convenient, snack-sized cup.
If you haven't tried hummus and pretzels yet... oh baby, you're missing out!

4. Coral lipstick

 I recently bought MAC lipstick in Crosswires and ever since I've been obsessed. I'm usually not big on lip colors and was slightly skeptical of how bold it looks in the tube, but I love, love the coral color on my lips! It's highly pigmented, but the best part is you can adjust the color to your liking - dab a little over lip balm for a soft coral look, or go heavy for a bold hue.

5. The Derby

Mint juleps and big hats can only mean one thing: the Kentucky Derby.
Tonight my sorority is having my favvvorite cocktail of all time, which we call K-derbs. It's basically an excuse to wear Lilly (and big hats!) and sip cocktails on the lawn of the Carolina Inn. My favorite band, Liquid Pleasure, will be playing and I'm so excited to shag the night away!

Happy Friday :)

Mexico Photo Recap

Hey lovelies!

Rather than long paragraphs about our adventures in Mexico, I think I'll let pictures tell the story. We...

Had a family photoshoot...

Got fancied up...

Enjoyed the Mexican nightlife (and the wine!)...

Explored Playa del Carmen...

Toured Mayan ruins in Tulum...

Played on the beach...

Snorkeled with sea turtles in Akumel...

And never wanted to leave...

I had a pretty harsh awakening yesterday when I had to wake up early and go back to "real life." Yuck!

Hope everyone is having a good week!

I'm back! And... I cried as our plane landed in America {no joke}.
I can't tell you guys how much I fell in love with Mexico. It's not just the resort and the pretty beaches, but it goes beyond that: I fell in love with the culture and the people - oh, the people! They are some of the nicest, most humble, and loving people I've ever met.

I definitely can't fit everything I have to tell you guys into one post, so I'll do a few re-caps. Starting with the beginning of the trip!
 We left early Friday morning. In Charlotte, it was dreary and cold, and this was the view I received from the plane window:
Gross, right??
The flight was around two and a half hours. At the two hour mark, things started to look a little different.
Bienvenidos Playa del Carmen!

At the airport, we were greeted with sunshine and a breath of hot Mexican air! After an hour-long ride in the shuttle, we finally arrived at our resort for the week, the all-inclusive Royal Playa del Carmen in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
{aka: the most amazing place I've ever been!}

When we first arrived, we walked around the resort with our mouths literally wide open. Green lawns, clear water, stately columns, palm trees that sway in the breeze... it's easily one of the prettiest places I've ever been!

The architecture was stunning...

After exploring, we headed back to our rooms to unpack everything. The rooms were stocked with a bottle of red wine, cozy robes and slippers, snacks, and every kind of alcohol you could imagine. There was a jacuzzi in every room. Not to mention the swinging hammock on our balcony - I admit this is where I spent most of my time!
Here's a pic from the resort's website:

The next day, we were up bright and early to soak up the sun by the pool. We had to save our chairs super early to make sure we got them (I'm talking 6 am!).

My favorite part of vacationing wasn't all the activities  (even though there was SO MUCH to do... snorkeling, bike riding, yoga, salsa dancing, wine tasting, bingo, etc, etc)... but I really enjoyed just relaxing by the pool. I could soak up the sun all day, enjoying a book or fashion magazine and sipping a fruity drink.

I miss this!

Mommy and me!

Ohhh Lordy. It's making me sad just thinking of this! Don't worry, I'll be back with more of Mexico... trust me, there's lots of good things to come!
Hope everyone had an awesome week and I can't wait to catch up on everyone's blogs!
