Seventies Chic

One of the hottest trends for Fall 2011 is seventies chic

This season, the look is retro with a modern twist.
There are several key pieces to look for that give off that seventies vibe:

Let's talk about blouses.

1. The Pocket Blouse

I love this blouse tucked into a fun skirt or high-waisted jeans (which we'll get to).
To up the seventies-factor, look for fun, bright colors!

2. The Pussybow Blouse

[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Short sleeved or long sleeved, pussybow blouses are the perfect way to try out the seventies trend.
Look for muted fall colors such as maroon and mustard, or look for retro patterns.
You don't have to spend a lot of money either -
top #5 is from Forever 21 and only $17.50.

3. Denim Flares

 [1, 2, 3, 4]

I love wearing denim in the Fall. And I absolutely love these flare jeans.

In the third grade, I had a pair of bell bottoms from Limited Too that I was obsessed with.
I think that's how I'm going to feel about my new J Crew flares.

This season, look for a high waist, wide flare, and dark wash.

Side Note: The great thing about high-waisted jeans is that you don't have to tuck your shirt in, and no one would ever know they're high-waisted.

4. High Heeled Loafers

[1, 2, 3, 4]

Aren't these amazing?

Denim flares do not go with flats.. you need some sort of heel.

So these go perfectly with flared denim jeans - and you can still see the tip of your shoe peeking out.
The chunky heels are particularly alluring.

5. Saddle Bags

[1, 2, 3, 4]

I have a purse obsession, I'm afraid.
This season, look for saddlebags that are
leather and crossbody to complete your look. 

Go forth, and be flower childs, everyone! Groovy?

What I'm Loving

Since I haven't had much time lately to put together a really great post, I figured it would be easy to do a "What I'm loving Wednesday" one. So this week I'm loving...

1. My New "Big Girl" Clothes

Blazer and skirt - Nordstrom, Nude pumps - Guess

Today I had the chance to wear some business attire that I recently purchased for interviews.
You can never go wrong with a pencil skirt and blazer.
I love that I can wear mine with nude heels (I felt very Kate Middleton-esque!)

2. My Monogrammed Wine Glass

My friend gave this to me as a late 21st birthday gift.
I'm planning on testing it out tomorrow night with a little Pinot Grigio!

3. This Shampoo

I bought this after I had my hair colored because I was nervous about using my regular shampoo.
After using it for the past couple of weeks, I can now say that I love it!
It's gentle on my hair, smells great, and is sulfate free so it won't fade your hair color (which often happens when going from a lighter hair color to a darker one).

4. This Book

I just finished reading The Book Thief a few days ago and can honestly say it was one of the best books I've read. I won't go too much into detail, but the book is told from the POV of death, and focuses on a young girl in Nazi Germany during WWII. 
This book had me laughing and crying, but also revelling in Zusak's language - his imagery is astounding and I promise you won't be disappointed if you read this book.
5. No Class on Fridays!

This is what my schedule looks like right now. The colored blocks are the times I have class...

The Last Night of Summer

... is tonight!

And tomorrow is my last "first day of class" - EVER! 

I love the beginning of school. I love school supplies, the motivation to achieve, and having a fresh slate.

Thought I'd share a few of my must-have school supplies..

I love how the left side is for planning my week, and the right side is blank. I write my to-do lists here!
I purchased this in the hard cover... that way I know it won't get ruined in my bag.

I use these specifically for writing in my planner! 
I may be slightly OCD.

I'm sorry, were you on the hunt for the best pens EVER? Cause you're lookin' at them.
I seriously won't write with anything else.
Medium Point. Blue ink. 
Nothing else will do.

Just cause they're cute.
And finally..

This bag has lasted me forever! During the summer, it's my beach bag. During school, it's my book bag.
It's so sturdy and the perfect size for my laptop AND books AND supplies.

Sorry for this quick post, but here are some of my latest obsessions..

My friend Carly recently got me addicted to The Daily Mail - a British gossip website that knows more about U.S. pop culture than we do.

Want to hear how Kim Kardashian got her body wedding ready?

On another note, I'm completely obsessed with this boutique in Charlotte called K-la, and they now have an online store (hopefully they'll be putting more of their products online soon). Anyways, after stopping by this week, I ended up with several dresses, a fall blouse, and this gorgeous necklace...

It's one of those necklaces you can dress up for a party or dress down for class. Love!

And perhaps, the most exciting of all, my latest purchase...

... which has had me scouring the Internet for panini recipes with every free second I've had.

That's right.. a PINK GEORGE FOREMAN that I found at Target for $15!

I can't even tell you how excited I was. I can't wait to grill delicious, healthy foods, and I've already found some ah-may-zing panini recipes to try out. Oh. Melted cheese, get in my belly.

On another note, I'm so sorry for being M.I.A. this week! This was my last week of my summer, so I took some time to enjoy being home with my family (and to do a little back-to-school shopping... which I will share with you later!).

Today was our first day of rush practice, and as if those five hours weren't long enough, we have a six-hour-long practice tomorrow. Tuesday is also the first day of class, so I apologize if I don't get to post much next week!

Friday's Fancies

I Hate That Word...


HATE IT. Sigh.

Which is why I'm not calling it a "diet"... I'm calling it a "health and fitness plan." Before I begin, let me make one thing clear: I'm not doing this to lose weight.

My healthy eating/workout plan that I put together includes making healthier food choices and incorporating work-outs into my daily routine. My goal is to tone up and feel better in my skin for the start of Fall!

In a separate post, I'm going to cover the fitness aspect of my little plan, but for now, here's some tips to focus on when picking what goes in your mouth.

1. Always eat breakfast

Breakfast jump-starts your metabolism and "breaks the fast" that your body endures from sleeping for eight hours. It also prevents you from overeating throughout the day. You may think that you're "saving calories" by skipping breakfast in the morning but - trust me - you're not!

For breakfast, I'll be sippin' on these delicious Yoplait frozen smoothies.

These little pouches come complete with frozen fruit and frozen yogurt chunks. All that's needed is to add milk!

2. Drink water!

It's imperative to stay hydrated, no matter what season it is. Eliminating soft drinks from your diet and drinking water is so much better for you. Drinking water before a meal also fills your belly up, so you're less likely to overeat.

3. It's not about eating less, it's about eating more... of the right foods.

Don't focus on restricting your calorie intake. Instead, you should be focusing on eating more of the right kinds of foods. That means cutting out junk food and processed foods (bye bye Cheez-Its!) and instead, replacing them with fruits and vegetables.

You'd think I was talking about drugs or something...

If you're like me, I get ravenous at night time. When this happens, I'll get cravings for a chocolatey brownie or a big sundae... this is when I reach for fruit, such as a bowl of cut up strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. They fill me up since they're composed of water, they taste sweet, and I find that after eating them I no longer crave something bad for me.


4. Limit alcohol intake

Most people don't realize just how many calories are in alcoholic drinks. The typical margarita (my favorite drink) contains 300-400 calories. A mixed drink can contain the same amount. However, just because you're trying to be healthier doesn't mean you have to cut out all of the fun!

If you're making your own drinks, try Scales margarita mix! A friend gave this to me for my 21st birthday. It tastes great, and the mix itself has only 10 calories per 8 ounces.


If you're headed to the bar, save calories by ordering a vodka tonic. This is my go-to drink. And tonic water has zero calories!


5. Keep a food diary

This little trick I learned from the one and only...

Keeping track of what you pop in your mouth all day is important because it makes you conscious of your eating habits.  

And finally...

6. It's okay to indulge every now and then!

If you don't, it can lead to overcompensation, in other words, binging. If you're a chocolate lover, have a couple of Hershey kisses after dinner for dessert. I love ice cream. Love, love, love. I'm keeping a box of Skinny Cow ice cream in my freezer to have after dinner when that sweet tooth hits (because believe me, I have a huge sweet tooth!). It's important that you don't ever feel deprived of something you love!
